Every Wednesday until November 19, 2020

6:45pm – 8:00pm

Class will meet in person in the Fellowship Hall and via zoom at 6:45pm (cpcnewhaven.org/live). The first 4 weeks will be a study of John Owen's “Communion with God,” followed by 5 weeks of C. S. Lewis' "The Great Divorce."

With "Communion with God" we’re excited to discuss and glean practical insights from this devotional classic. Though a formidable theologian, Owen writes here with a deep, practical love of Christ and a pastor’s heart. What could convince someone to become a Christian, when outwardly in the 1st Century it brought worldly shame and loss? Owen responds by saying, “Look at the company we keep! We can enjoy intimate communion with the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!” We all struggle with enjoying God’s presence and wondering if being a Christian is even worth it. We’ll be using this book as a wonderful jumping-off point to encourage us all in our walks with the Lord.

Lewis' wonderful novel of a "dream," The Great Divorce, seeks to expose the need for all of us to make a final and ultimate choice. As he writes in the Preface, "if we accept Heaven we shall not be able to retain even the smallest and most intimate souvenirs of Hell." Our course will incorporate weekly dramatizations of the conversations in the novel, along with biblical and theological reflections that the novel touches on. By discussing an insightful and intense, yet imaginative book, our hope is that we open ourselves for a more forthright and pure devotion to Christ.
